Letter to Collegiate Judges 2023-24 – Number One
August 23, 2023
Welcome to the 2024 collegiate judging season.
As of Friday, August 25, 2023, you can go to https://roadtonationals.com/ja
Thank you to those of you who attended the “NCAA Update” sessions at the USA Gymnastics Regional
Congresses. It was great to see you! And thank you to the presenters.
I am still in the process of updating the new “Collegiate Judging Assigning System Guide” for the
2024 Season. It will soon be on NAWGJ.org/NCAA page. Please read or re-read this document. The “NCAA Compensation Guidelines” document and the “New” to Collegiate Judging form are
also currently being updated.
New college judges who entered their profile in the Judges Assigning System last year or sent me
the “New” to Collegiate Judging form should be able to enter their information in JAS. Many of those forms came in after the assigning
process was completed in late October 2022. NAWGJ is in the process of developing training materials and a clinic for you. More on that soon!
Let me know if you have any difficulty getting into JAS. The directions in the 2023 Judges Assigning System Guide should be helpful.
Everyone: You should be able to enter RTN/JAS with your 2023 password. If you want to change your password, you can. If a response from JAS does not come promptly, check your Spam folder or if you are on Gmail, your “Updates” or “Promotions” folder.
Welcome to Mary Lou Ackman from Illinois, Jackie Fain from Louisiana and Paul Padron from South
Carolina who are joining us as new Regional Assigners due to the completion of the four-year terms for Barbara Giulivo, Linda McDonald, and Mark Welch. A huge thank-you to them
all.
Other notes:
• We have three new schools with college teams included
in JAS for 2024 – (Clemson, Utica, and Talladega). We are thrilled to welcome
them.
• Many colleges have not posted their schedules. Conferences are
working out use of their facilities for all their winter sports and that impacts conference meets and non-conference meets for many schools. You can sometimes see schedules on the university
web site.
• NCAA assigning of Regionals and Nationals: We know that some
letters are out, but from what I am hearing, they were not all sent out at the same time. Acceptances are due back by September 15th, so there is a bit of time before they will make
replacements.
• The college “Modifications” will be distributed in the Fall once they
have been approved by the NCAA. Those will be your official rules for collegiate judging.
• Television coverage of this weekend’s U.S .Championships is on CNBC and
NBC this Saturday and Sunday. Check your local listings.
We’re excited for this new season and the chance to work with you.

Letter to Collegiate Judges 2023-2024 – Number Two
September 5, 2023
September is here and many of you have updated your profiles
in JAS (201 judges). Please take the time to add your dates of availability. There are very few college
meets on Monday through Thursday, so concentrate on the weekends (Friday- Sunday). 19 schools have entered data. The Invitational meets will take a week or two more as their system and
getting the information into JAS is much more complicated. A few are entered. As many of you know, for this season and several
of the following years the NCAA Conference Championships on March 23, 2024, will conflict with Level 10 State meets in several states.
Once JAS assigning begins in
early October, we will assign the Conference meets early in the cycle. You do not need to be on a Conference meet in order to judge at NCAA Regionals/Nationals, but, of course, the experience
with a multiple college team meet and high-level teams will certainly assist you in getting ready to judge at NCAA Championships.
We anticipate that the Regional Assigners will be able to start assigning “Local” judges to college
meets in early October.
If you have been listening to the national sports news this summer, you are aware that schools, and
their gymnastics teams, are changing conferences all over the country. Some of those schools are moving in 2024 and some in 2025. The number of teams in a Conference will impact the number of
sessions in the Conference meets this year and in the future.
As of now, the only meet weekend in April is April 12-14, 2024, when the USA Gymnastics sponsored
National Championship is at West Chester University in Pennsylvania. Also of note is the Division III National Championship at Ursinus College in Collegeville, PA on March 22-23, 2024. There is
no need to enter availability for other April dates.
NCAA Regionals (now called Rounds 1, 2, 3 are April 3-6, 2024, in
• Ann Arbor, MI
• Berkeley, CA
• Fayetteville, AR
• Gainesville, FL
The NCAA Nationals is again in Fort Worth, TX April 18-20, 2024.
Event preferences: It is helpful to all the assigners if you enter your event preferences
in JAS. “None” in terms of event preference is not useful to us at all. Please at least give us your 1st
choice and last choice.
Other news:
NAWGJ.org/NCAA web site:
• Posted: College rules called “Modifications” – September 1,
2023.
• The “Supplement” to the Modifications is currently being updated by the
Women’s Coaches Gymnastics Association.
• Posted: NCAA Compensation Document – August 21,
2023.
• The 2024 “Collegiate Judging Assigning System Guide” is “in process” so
don’t worry about answering that question at this time.
If you have not done so, please go to https://roadtonationals.com/ja

Coach Evaluations
have just been posted in JAS. Click on “JAS Judges” on the menu on the left and scroll down to “Evaluation
Summary”.
2023 Coach Evaluation of Judges
• After every meet, Coaches and Meet Referees may evaluate the
performance of judges.
• The evaluation questions are available on the NAWGJ/NCAA
webpage: https://nawgj.org/ncaa-informa
• Questions are either rated yes/no or on a one-to-five-point scale with
one being the best. Comments may also be added.
• Prior to the beginning of the next season, the evaluations are
summarized and published on the Road to Nationals/JAS site for judges to
view.
• In order to maintain anonymity, evaluation summaries are only published
for officials who have judged at four distinct teams and by three distinct meets.
• For each of the questions, the Evaluation Summary reflects the
following wording:
All or mostly positive
Mixed responses
Needs attention.
• Positive text comments are noted if available. A lack of positive comments does not mean that a judge’s officiating was not viewed positively. Coaches are busy and often do not have time to
enter comments.
• Areas to work on are listed based on the scored questions and the
comments entered by coaches. They are required to enter a comment if the judge receives a rating of 3-4-5 on a question.

Please remember to add your availability to JAS by September 25, 2023!

Letter to Collegiate Judges 2023-2024 – Number Four
September 25, 2023
Today (September 25, 2023) is the published deadline for entering or updating information in your
Judges Assigning System (JAS) profile and indicating your availability to judge college meets. 359 judges have updated their profiles, but
20 of those have no availability dates entered. Please!
Assigners will be working on selecting judges in the next few days and the actual assigning will
begin with the meet referee and conference assignments next Monday.
Once assigned you will receive an email and have five (5) days to accept the assignment. The
assignments are not done chronologically, so you may receive a March assignment prior to receiving a January assignment.
Please remember to keep updating your availability in JAS!
*************************
The 2024 “Collegiate Judges Assigning System Guide (Judge’s Manual)” is now posted on
NAWGJ.org/NCAA. Please review it, it has much more than just the database directions for Road to Nationals. Note in your JAS Profile that you have done so.
The new 2023-24 “Rules Modifications Document” is there as well as the “NCAA Compensation
Guidelines.” The coaches association JAS committee is updating the “Supplemental Procedures
and Forms”. It will include the new Yellow Card form, the updated combined Inquiry and Routine Summary form, and the Meet Referee materials.
******************************
Clinic dates (in Zoom) for Fall 2023 have been set. Please add these to your calendar.
Additional information will be forthcoming and posted on NAWGJ.org/NCAA.
Sunday, November 12, 7-9 pm EST, “New to College Judging”. This is only for new level 10 judges,
and those new to college judging in the last two-three years.
Tuesday, December 5, 7-9 pm EST, “NCAA Vault, Bars, Procedures" Clinic. For all collegiate
judges.
Tuesday, December 12, 7-9 pm EST, “NCAA Beam, Floor and Routine Summary Form Training". For
all collegiate judges.

We’re excited about starting the assignment process and enthused about again judging collegiate
gymnastics.

Letter to Collegiate Judges 2023-2024 – Number Five
September 29, 2023
Kick-off time for the 2024 collegiate judging season!
This coming week we will start the process of assigning all the college meets, the eleven
Conference Championships (March 23, 2024), the Invitationals, the Division III National Championship (Ursinus College, Collegeville, PA March 22 & 23, 2024) and the USAG National Collegiate
Championship (West Chester University, West Chester, PA April 12-14, 2024). This assigning will go on for most of the month of October.
If we did it all in the next few days, it would be very chaotic. Not all meets have been
entered into the JAS system yet. You will recall that for Division I meets 50% of the judges are to be “Local” and 50%
are from “Out of Area”. Most of the first assignments, at the request of the Woman’s Collegiate Gymnastics Association (WCGA), will be the Meet Referees.
Now is the time to make sure that your availability in JAS is accurate. Due to the change in the USAG state meet schedule this year, there will be many more opportunities for assignment to the Conference Championships on March
23rd. If you could add that date to your calendar, it would be wonderful. Those assignments will be done in the next few days.
Also, remember that using this system, your assignments are not done in chronological order.
You may receive an assignment in March and then one in late January.
Have a great gymnastics season.

October 27, 2023
Lots of business items this time.
AVAILABILITY: The Regional Assigners and I are still assigning collegiate meets. Some meet dates
have changed and there are always a few positions that are difficult to assign due to geographics. That brings me to “Availability” again. Please go into JAS and update your
schedule. If you cannot accept a meet on a date that you are traveling, please remove it. You can either do that in your calendar or in the list of meets (green button at the top of the
page) marked as “See Dates Available Detail.”
If you have meet assignments that are pending, please accept them
soon.
While you are in JAS, read the “Payment Information” for your meets, particularly the notes section
at the bottom of the right column. Look carefully at this page. It will tell you when/how you will be paid, if you need to drive a rental car, if you will have single/double room
occupancy, etc. When you accept a meet, you are agreeing to the terms of the school’s contract.
AFFILIATION (P. 9 in Judges Manual):
Particularly note Bullet Number 6. The coach’s association (WCGA) clarified this with the
help of the NCAA Championship Committee during the summer. If you missed this, please let your assigner know so that they can change your assignment.
Collegiate affiliation is different from the USAG Development Program. For them, you cannot
be a CJ. For college you cannot judge that team (or for some of the bullets, that conference). It is a matter of perception by the many individuals following collegiate gymnastics.
You are eligible, if selected by NCAA, to judge NCAA Regionals. They would move you to a meet where you have no affiliation.
RULES:
The Supplement to the Modifications was posted this week on NAWGJ.org/NCAA. Also, the “Rules
Newsletter” is posted on the same site usually on the 1st and 15th of each month by Janette Doucette, the new Rules Interpreter. Questions on NCAA Rules should be directed to her
at wgym.ncaa.rules@outlook.com. An October 15, 2023 newsletter was posted.
CONTRACTS AND COMPENSATION:
Collegiate contracts from the schools are beginning to be sent out. Please read them
carefully and send them back promptly. The Compensation document for NCAA meets is on NAWGJ.org/NCAA. It has key details on per diem, travel, and inclement weather
issues.
I am going to write a separate letter about the clinics. This note is
long.
Thank you for your patience with the whole JAS assigning process.

Letter to Collegiate Judges 2023-2024 – Number Nine
November 16, 2023
We are well into the busy season in preparing for collegiate
judging.
RULES:
• The November 15th “Rules Newsletter” was posted yesterday on
NAWGJ.org/NCAA. These are distributed to coaches and judges around the first and fifteenth of the month, so you should look for them. Questions on collegiate rules should be sent to
Janette Doucette at wgym.ncaa.rules@outlook.com. Please indicate your name and state if you submit a question.
• Collegiate rules are in effect for two years and this is the second
year of the cycle. Please review “Rules News Archive, March 21, 2023”. These interpretations are still in effect. Again, this is on NAWGJ.org/NCAA. Go to “Rules and
Clarifications, then “Rules News Archive” at the bottom. Click on the link and select the 2023 Archive Document.
• There is a new Inquiry and Routine Summary form that has come out since
the Supplement was published. We will add a link to it to that NAWGJ.org/NCAA site.
AVAILABILITY:
I can’t say this enough and your Regional Assigners will say it as well. We are not done with
assigning for 2024. Meets change and judge’s circumstances change. We will have opportunities for assignments all during the season. I had an opening yesterday. Please go into JAS
and remove any dates that are no longer available for you. AND, add any dates that are now open.
WRITTEN EXAM:
It is not available yet. Look for it on JAS around the 1st of December. The finish date
will be extended.
CONTRACTS:
You should have received contracts from most of your assigned schools. Let your Regional
Assigner or the school contact (listed in JAS) know if you have not. Return them promptly, particularly if there is a flight involved. The institutions want to have all their arrangements
made prior to the college holiday vacation break.
CLINICS:
The Women’s Collegiate Gymnastics Association (WCGA) has encouraged us to take attendance at all
clinic sessions and record participation. Unlike in past years, you need to register. You can do that on NAWGJ.org/Education. Those who attended the “New to College Judging” clinic on
November 12th or 16th are expected to attend these clinics as well.
There is further information on using Zoom for clinics on the NAWGJ Education
website.
